Streamlining Sports Advertising for Genius Sports

Project Overview

Ad Builder is a platform that allows non-technical users to create, customize, and release sports advertising banners efficiently. It streamlines the manual work previously done by developers, enabling clients to manage brand assets, match data, and betting information across multiple campaigns and formats.

Client

Genius Sports

Role

Entire product design from research to conception, visualization and testing

Challenges

1. Lengthy and Manual Process: The creation and release of adverts took 7–14 days and required developer intervention for each banner.

2. Limited Accessibility: Only technical users could configure adverts, limiting scalability and flexibility.

3. High Risk of Errors: Manual creation of banners often led to inconsistencies in branding and data display.

4. Fragmented Workflow: Managing multiple clients, assets, and campaigns was cumbersome and error-prone.

Opportunities

1. Empower Non-technical Users: Enable marketing or operations teams to create and manage adverts without coding skills.

2. Increase Speed and Efficiency: Reduce the release time of banners from 7–14 days to a matter of hours.

3. Expand Client Base and Offerings: Make the platform more accessible and scalable, allowing Genius Sports to serve more clients.

4. Incorporate Best Practices: Build a platform that embeds years of sports advertising experience to ensure high-quality, consistent outputs.

User Research

Methods used

User interviews with marketers and operations teams.

Surveys with clients to identify pain points in the current advert creation workflow.

Observational sessions with developers to understand the manual steps currently required.

Key findings

Users spend too much time waiting for adverts to be released

Non-technical users need a platform that guides them through content creation

There’s high demand for standardization and best practices embedded in the system to maintain branding consistency

LoFi

During the LoFi phase, we focused on simplicity and clarity, creating wireframes that allowed users to select clients, upload brand assets, and pull in match and betting data. Drag-and-drop components were designed to make advert customization fast and flexible, and early prototypes were tested with non-technical users to ensure the workflows were intuitive and easy to use.

The Solution

The HiFi solution delivers a centralized dashboard where users can manage multiple clients and brand assets, combined with a powerful Content Builder interface featuring drag-and-drop elements, live previews, and templates. It integrates seamlessly with sports and betting databases to pull in real-time data for adverts, while an automated publishing workflow drastically reduces release time. Built-in best practices and branding rules ensure consistent, high-quality output across all campaigns, making the platform both efficient and easy to use for non-technical users.

    Results

Reduced Advert Release Time: From 7–14 days to just a few hours.

Increased Accessibility: Non-technical users can now create and publish adverts without developer support.

Scalability: Ability to manage multiple clients and campaigns simultaneously, expanding the client base.

Consistency and Quality: Standardized branding and adherence to sports best practices ensured high-quality deliverables.
